A woman on honeymoon was killed when a driver ploughed his car into tourists on California's famous Venice Beach.

Alice Gruppioni, 32, whose wedding was on July 20, was hit by a man who drove on to the boardwalk "bent on evil" and apparently aiming at pedestrians.

Ms Gruppioni, from Bologna in Italy, died in hospital. Her father Valerio Gruppioni was former president of Bologna football team and runs Sira group, which makes radiators.

Eleven other people were injured in the incident on Saturday night. One is said to be critical in hospital, two are in a serious condition and the eight others were treated for more minor injuries.

One witness, Daniel Regidor, 50, told the Los Angeles Times: "A car ploughed through the boardwalk. (There were) people screaming, running.

"I was half a mile from the scene, but you could see just this mass of people trying to get out of the way. Just a lot of people screaming. It was horrible.

"I saw somebody flying up in the air. When I came upon the scene, there were a bunch of people on the ground, bloodied."

Louisa Hodge, 35, who witnessed the crash, said: "There were people kind of stumbling around, blood dripping down their legs looking confused not knowing what had happened, people screaming.

"It was blocks and blocks of people just strewn across the sidewalk."

The 38-year-old driver, Nathan Campbell, has been charged with murder.

Los Angeles Police Department Commander Andy Smith said: "There is no indication that he knew anybody he hit. It looks like this guy wanted to run over a bunch of people. One guy bent on doing evil."

Campbell is being held on a $1m (£655,000) bond .

CCTV footage showed a man parking his black vehicle alongside the seaside boardwalk and watching the scene for several minutes before getting back into the car and speeding into the crowd.

He fled the scene, but later turned himself in at Santa Monica police station.

Venice Beach boardwalk, a 1.5-mile stretch that runs along the sand, is home to galleries, restaurants and tattoo shops.

It can draw as many as 150,000 people on summer weekends and is popular with joggers and inline skaters.
