England Crash Out Of Cricket World Cup

England have crashed out of the cricket World Cup after a dismal performance against Bangladesh.

England were set a target of 276 to win and stay in contention for the quarter finals but poor batting saw them lose to Bangladesh by 15 runs.

Put in to bat at the Adelaide Oval, things looked bad for Bangladesh as an opening spell by England bowler James Anderson saw them lose two wickets for just eight runs.

But man of the match Mohammad Mahmudullah then struck his and Bangladesh's first World Cup century, going on to lift Bangladesh to 275 for seven. His brother-in-law Mushfiqur Rahim made 89.

England, despite being finalists in the competition three times, made a mess of their chase on what should have been a good batting wicket, folding for 260 in the 49th over.

Rubel Hossain was Bangladesh's star with the ball, clean bowling Stuart Broad and last man James Anderson to seal victory for the Tigers.

Speaking after the match, Mamudullah said the win was "really special".

He added: "We thought we might have been 15-20 runs short but, we knew if we could get early wickets, we were in."

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who led his side superbly in the field, said he felt "very proud".

He added: "I'm really happy for all those people back home who have wanted us to make it this far.

"We had a good combination today, especially with the seven batsmen. They showed their guts today and the bowlers then did a very good job."

England skipper Eoin Morgan, who made his fifth duck in his last 11 innings, said he was "gutted", adding that the team had "struggled" since arriving at the tournament.

"It was pretty poor, to be knocked out of the World Cup is unbelievably disappointing."

Former England player Kevin Pietersen was among those expressing disbelief in England's failure, tweeting: "I CANNOT BELIVE THIS! I JUST CANNOT! But, well done Bangladesh! You deserved it!"

Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted: "Don't worry.... I am sure some positives will have come out of this WC for @ECB_cricket #MyA***"

The loss means that England, whose only win has been against non-test team Scotland, will return home after their final game - against Afghanistan on 13 March.

Bangladesh will progress to the quarter-finals, along with Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia from Pool A.
