Parliament Dissolved: Election Race Begins

Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 Maret 2015 | 20.48

David Cameron said in five years he had put Britain "back on her feet again" as he formally fired the starting gun on the election race after a meeting with the Queen.

Speaking on the steps of Number 10 after returning from Buckingham Palace where he asked the Queen to dissolve Parliament, Mr Cameron said voters face a "stark choice" between him and Ed Miliband.

With 38 days to go until the election, the Conservatives would offer strong leadership and a country that was safe and secure but Mr Miliband would offer a country mired in "economic chaos".

He said: "Britain is on the right track. This election is about moving forward, and that is what, as Prime Minister here at Downing Street, I will deliver."

And he warned that if voters put Mr Miliband in Number 10 working families would face a £3,000 tax hike.

In a YouTube video released by the Conservatives before Mr Cameron's journey to Buckingham Palace, the Conservative leader said May 7 was "the most important General Election in a generation".

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg also made the trip to Buckingham Palace for a meeting with the Queen in his role as President of the Privy Council.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Mr Clegg predicted another coalition government come May 7 and said: "It is my view that the era of single-party government is now over in British politics."

He said: "About the very last thing the country now needs is a lurch to the left or the right and yet that is exactly what the Conservative and Labour parties are now threatening."

He added: "I think what the vast majority of people in this country want is that we keep this country and our government anchored in the centre ground, which is where the Liberal Democrats have anchored the government over the last five years."

The final act of pomp and ceremony of the coalition government fires the starting gun on the General Election campaign.

As the formalities played out at Buckingham Palace, Ed Miliband was attempting to win over business with the launch of its first "mini manifestos" in which the Labour leader warned of the "clear and present danger" of leaving the EU.

He said:  "There could be nothing worse for our country or for our great exporting businesses than playing political games with our membership of the EU. David Cameron used to understand that. But in the past five years our place in the European Union has become less and less secure."

UKIP leader Nigel Farage was due to launch his party's five election pledges this afternoon along with a new poster.

The pledges are: "1. Say No to EU 2. Control our borders 3. Extra £3bn for the NHS 4. Cut foreign aid spending 5. No tax on the minimum wage."

With Parliament dissolved, MPs immediately lose their title and are asked to remove references to it, or place disclaimers on any email or social media account which names them as an MP.

Labour Business Launch Overshadowed By Row

By Sophy Ridge, Political Correspondent

Ed Miliband's business manifesto launch has been overshadowed by a row over Labour's use of business leaders' quotes in an advert for the party's stance on the EU.

The Labour leader faced a backlash over the advertisement in the Financial Times, published on the morning Mr Miliband warned voters that leaving the European Union was a "clear and present danger" to British business.

In a full-page advert under the Labour message: "The biggest risk to British business is the threat of an EU exit. Labour will put the national interest first. We will deliver reform not exit" were a number of quotes from the business leaders about Europe.

Company spokesmen were swift to issue statements making clear that they were not linked to Labour.

A spokesman said: "Siemens has profound concerns about a possible UK exit from the EU. We are also on record of expressing our concern about the uncertainty that a referendum would create - particularly as it is not clear what options would be presented.

"We are however very clear that a referendum might be called, and if it is, we will support efforts to get a better deal and stay in the EU. We do not, however, endorse any political party."

A statement from Kellogg's said the quote used by Labour in the advert was made over a year ago by its UK managing director.

It added: "What he was expressing was a concern about the insecurity which comes from the uncertainty about Britain's position in the EU – nothing more. Kellogg's is strictly non-partisan and does not endorse any political party."

However, SCM Direct founding partner Gina Miller said she was happy for her comments to be used and added: "I'm clearly aware of it because they told me it was happening last week."

Mr Miliband said all the comments on the advert were made in public and the party was entitled to use them.

He said: "We've simply quoted public statements by these businesses about the place of Britain in the European Union.

"And I think lots of businesses all around this country are not necessarily going to be supporting Labour or the Conservatives but they do have a very strong view about our place in the EU."

With 38 days to go until the General Election, Mr Miliband was in the City of London setting out his pitch to business leaders with the launch of the first of the party's "mini manifestos".

He said: "There could be nothing worse for our country or for our great exporting businesses than playing political games with our membership of the EU. David Cameron used to understand that. But in the past five years our place in the European Union has become less and less secure.

"He used to say he would campaign to keep Britain in Europe. But now he won't rule out campaigning to leave."

David Cameron has promised a referendum by 2017 if he wins the election - something that Mr Miliband described as "a recipe for two years of uncertainty".

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg joined in with the criticism of Mr Cameron's stance by saying he would never "play footsie" with Britain's membership of the EU.

Labour's 22-page A Better Plan For Business is an attempt to fight back against concerns that Mr Miliband would put the economic recovery at risk.

Business insiders have told Sky News they are faced with a difficult choice between a Conservative Party who would put Britain's EU membership at risk and a Labour Party perceived as anti-business.

Mr Miliband was sharply criticised by the Boots boss Stefano Pessina earlier this year, who warned a Labour government would be a "catastrophe" for Britain.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph on Monday, Dr Assem Allam - who has donated £400,000 to the Labour Party - described the Conservatives as "the best party in Europe" to manage the economy.

He criticised Mr Miliband for wanting to "penalise" wealth creators with a mansion tax and a rise in the top rate of tax.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, UKIP's Nigel Farage said Mr Cameron had been "forced into" promising a 2017 referendum on Britain's membership of the UK and that his party's job was to "hold his feet to the fire to make sure that the referendum is not a stitch-up".

He added: "I don't want this to be kicked into the long grass until the end of 2017. I think it should be before the end of this year."

It comes as Mr Cameron has visited the Queen to ask for Parliament to be dissolved.

British Couple Shot Dead In Benidorm Villa

A murder investigation has been launched after a British couple were found shot dead in their villa near Benidorm.

Sky News Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said the couple, aged 77 and named by Spanish police as Peter and Jean Tarsey, were found dead in the villa in Xalo at around 4pm on Sunday.

He said: "Yesterday they were expecting dinner guests. Last night the guests got into the villa and found them, it's been described to me locked in each other's arms on the sofa.

"Both of them had been shot dead by a small calibre gun. Police say that various gunshots had been fired."

The Guardia Civil said post-mortem examinations have not yet been completed, but they are believed to have been killed in the last few days.

The couple, who have been residents in Spain for 18 years, had no known criminal history and "had not been doing anything strange", according to police.

Officers said there was no sign of forced entry and the case is being treated as homicide. A TV was found to be missing in the property and a computer had been thrown into the swimming pool.

A spokeswoman for the Guardia Civil said: "At around 4.15pm yesterday, some friends of the couple went to their villa because they had not been seen for a few days.

"They found the door was open and there were no signs of a break-in.

"The couple, who had been living in Spain for 18 years, were found dead with gunshot wounds on the sofa.

"The Guardia Civil is now awaiting the results of post-mortem examinations and investigations continue."

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Alicante, Spain.

"We stand ready to provide consular assistance."

Alps Co-Pilot Treated For Suicidal Tendencies

The co-pilot in the French Alps plane disaster was treated for suicidal tendencies years ago, German prosecutors say.

But prosecutors' spokesman, Ralf Herrenbrueck, told a news conference that Andreas Lubitz, 27, had not been treated recently.

The Germanwings co-pilot is believed to have deliberately crashed Flight 4U 9525 last week, killing all those on board.

Mr Herrenbrueck said investigators had found no indication of a motive so far, nor any sign of a physical illness.

He also said there was still no evidence that Lubitz said anything beforehand about what he was about to do.

More follows...

Crash Captain Screamed 'Open The Damn Door!'

The captain of the Germanwings jet that crashed in the French Alps reportedly screamed at his co-pilot to "open the damn door" as he tried to get in the cockpit.

Andreas Lubitz, 27, apparently locked the captain out of the cabin and deliberately flew the Germanwings jet into a mountain, killing 150 people.

The older pilot left to use the toilet and then desperately tried to open the cockpit door during Flight 4U 9525's eight-minute descent, according to the black box voice recorder.

Germany's Bild on Sunday newspaper said he is heard shouting: "For God's sake, open the door!" as passengers scream in the background.

He then tries to smash through the heavily-reinforced door with an axe, while yelling at a silent Lubitz to "open the damn door".

Police Threat Over Children Playing Adult Games

Parents of primary school children have been warned they could be reported to police or social services if they let their children play violent or sexual video games.

A group of 15 primary schools and one secondary academy in Nantwich, Cheshire, sent the letter warning adult-themed games, such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, could lead to "early sexualised behaviours".

"Several children have reported playing or watching adults play games which are inappropriate for their age and they have described the levels of violence and sexual content they have witnessed: Call Of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Dogs Of War and other similar games are all inappropriate for children and they should not have access to them," the letter said.

"If your child is allowed to have inappropriate access to any game or associated product that is designated 18-plus we are advised to contact the police and children's social care as it is neglectful."

The letter also warned against giving young children access to social media, including Facebook or WhatsApp, because it "leaves them vulnerable to grooming for sexual exploitation or extreme violence".

The two highest ratings for video games in the UK are Mature - generally suitable for ages 17 and up - and Adults Only - suitable only 18 and over, including prolonged scenes of intense violence, graphic sexual content and/or gambling with real currency.

Video game ratings are set by Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) and it is illegal for retailers to sell 12, 16 and 18 rated games to people below those ages.

It is not, however, illegal for younger children to play them.

Games rated 16 depict violence or sexual activity in a manner "that looks the same as would be expected in real life". They also have more extreme language, encourage the use of tobacco and drugs and the depiction of criminal activities, the Video Standards Council website says.

Games are rated 18 when they include "gross violence".

"In general terms it is where the level of violence is so visually strong that it would make the reasonable viewer react with a sense of revulsion," the council says.

Tory Grandee 'Puzzled' By Cameron's Two-Term Vow

Tory grandee Malcolm Rifkind says he is "puzzled" by David Cameron's declaration that he will only serve two terms as Prime Minister.

Mr Cameron last week said he was standing for election to serve for a full second term, but ruled out staying on for a third term.

"Terms are like Shredded Wheat: two are wonderful but three might just be too many," Mr Cameron told BBC News.

Speaking to Sky News' Murnaghan on his last day as a Member of Parliament, Sir Malcolm said he was "surprised" the timing of Mr Cameron's announcement.

"I was puzzled by that. I'm not sure what the thinking was. I think it was to try to come across as somebody - 'I'm not power mad, I've got a job to do, finish the job, time to move on'," Sir Malcolm said.

"It's certainly true that we've got a sort of unofficial rule which Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair both fell victim to - 10 years and the public say 'thank you very much, don't ring us, we'll ring you'.

"So there was no great astonishment in what he said. It was the timing of it, just before a General Election. I was surprised, I have to say."

The Prime Minister also named three of his senior colleagues - Home Secretary Theresa May, Chancellor George Osborne and London mayor Boris Johnson - as potential successors as Conservative leader when he steps down.

Former foreign secretary Sir Malcolm said: "You cannot remotely assume now who in four or five years time is going to be the frontrunner. It could quite easily be none of the three."

Cabinet Minister Iain Duncan Smith, speaking to BBC1's Andrew Marr Show, also refused to be drawn on who would be the next Tory leader, but suggested it might be someone already in the public eye.

"I don't think that you're going to have in any shape or form a brand-new leader that the country has never seen, because all the people that might want to stand for that will have been up in the public sphere for some time," he said.

Mr Duncan Smith also appeared to contradict Mr Cameron when he said he would have to step down as Tory leader some time during the next Parliament in order for his replacement to be picked ahead of the poll expected in 2020.

The Prime Minister had claimed that he would serve "every day" of a second term and Downing Street suggested that he may fight the 2020 election before handing over to a successor.

Mr Duncan Smith, himself a former Conservative leader, added: "But I have to tell you - I have huge faith and I think this prime minister has done a fantastic job.

"I think I will be sorry to see him go, as and when he chooses to do that, because we have turned the economy around under his stewardship.

Co-Pilot's Hometown 'Sad' Under Media Spotlight

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Maret 2015 | 20.49

By Mike McCarthy, Sky News Correspondent

Single candles placed discreetly in neat gardens indicate expressions of sympathy in the pretty German town of Montabaur.

Had it not been for the droves of camera crews however - you would hardly notice that this was the home town of co-pilot Andreas Lubitz.

In the shops and cafes you can hear people speaking quietly about the media presence in this little, part-medieval place but there's not much conversation about him.

"Do you think the outside world will associate us with him?" asks one shop assistant who prefers not to be named and studiously avoids mention of THAT name.

The town's mayor too chooses not to utter the word "Lubitz".

In a brief statement, Edmund Schaaf said: "Our hearts and minds go to all victims and their relatives. We ask the media to respect the privacy of the family. There will be no further statements."

Montabaur is dominated by a striking castle painted yellow. It overlooks the attractive hillside town which feels as though it can't wait to shake off winter.

These are the streets that Lubitz walked. These are the shops and bars where he spent his time and money. He grew up here and they know him but they're deeply reluctant to discuss him.

Cafe waitress Simona Nardelli offers the slightest glimpse of the man she served regularly.

"He was just a normal guy. He drank his cappuccino. Nothing else."

She's more keen to talk about the media presence.

"Its sad there is so much journalistic interest in the family now," she said.

Spring is coming and Montabaur needs to move on.
